Musk debuts Grok-3 AI chatbot to rival OpenAI, DeepSeek
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, showed off the updated Grok-3 model, showcasing a version of the chatbot technology that the billionaire has said is the "smartest AI on Earth." Across math, science and coding benchmarks, Grok-3 beats Alphabet's Google Gemini, DeepSeek's V3 model, Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's GPT-4o, the company said via a live stream on Monday. Grok-3 has "more than 10 times" the computing power of its predecessor and completed pretraining in early January, Musk said in a presentation alongside three of xAI's engineers. "We're continually improving the models every day, and literally within 24 hours, you'll see improvements," Musk said.

How Chinese AI Startup DeepSeek Made a Model that Rivals OpenAI
On January 20, DeepSeek, a relatively unknown AI research lab from China, released an open source model that's quickly become the talk of the town in Silicon Valley. According to a paper authored by the company, DeepSeek-R1 beats the industry's leading models like OpenAI o1 on several math and reasoning benchmarks. In fact, on many metrics that matter--capability, cost, openness--DeepSeek is giving Western AI giants a run for their money. US export controls have severely curtailed the ability of Chinese tech firms to compete on AI in the Western way--that is, infinitely scaling up by buying more chips and training for a longer period of time. As a result, most Chinese companies have focused on downstream applications rather than building their own models.

Apple testing platforms to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT
Apple is working on artificial intelligence (AI) offerings similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, Bloomberg News has reported, sending its shares up as much as 2 percent to a record high. The iPhone maker has built its own framework, known as Ajax, to create large language models (LLMs) and is also testing a chatbot that some engineers call "Apple GPT", the report said on Wednesday, quoting people with knowledge of the matter. The company did not respond to a request for comment from the Reuters news agency. Apple has so far held back from any big moves in AI and even avoided mentioning the buzzword at its developer conference in June – in stark contrast to other tech giants such as Alphabet and Microsoft, which have made bold moves to incorporate the breakthrough technology. Shares of Microsoft, Nvidia and Alphabet dropped more than 1 percent after the report.

Elon Musk creates AI company to rival OpenAI
After describing ChatGPT's left-wing bias as'concerning', Elon Musk is now working on a new AI chatbot of his own. The Twitter, Telsa and SpaceX boss has registered a company with the name of'X.AI', a subsidiary under his new conglomerate X Holdings Corp. According to the Financial Times, the new subsidiary will be the home of efforts to build a tool just like the hugely successful ChatGPT, owned by OpenAI. Musk is assembling a team of AI researchers and engineers and is in discussions with some investors in SpaceX and Tesla about putting money into his new venture. Due to Musk's belief in free speech, the new bot product could have less of a left-wing bias than ChatGPT, which has already been criticised for'woke' responses. Twitter, Telsa and SpaceX boss Elon Musk (pictured) has registered an artificial intelligence (AI) company with the name of'X.AI' Mr Musk has been critical of AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT in the past.

Elon Musk plans AI startup to rival OpenAI, Financial Times reports
April 14 (Reuters) - Billionaire Elon Musk is working on launching an artificial intelligence start-up that will rival ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, the Financial Times reported on Friday citing people familiar with his plans. Twitter-owner Musk is assembling a team of AI researchers and engineers, according to the FT report, and is also in discussions with some investors in SpaceX and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) about putting money into his new venture. Musk's plan for the firm comes weeks after a group of AI researchers and executives, including himself, called for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4, citing potential risks to society. Companies from Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) to Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) are pushing to incorporate Generative AI, the technology behind chatbot sensation ChatGPT, into their offerings. However, ChatGPT is facing pushback as regulators call for well-defined rules ahead of its mass adoption.

AI21 Labs trains a massive language model to rival OpenAI's GPT-3
The Transform Technology Summits start October 13th with Low-Code/No Code: Enabling Enterprise Agility. For the better part of a year, OpenAI's GPT-3 has remained among the largest AI language models ever created, if not the largest of its kind. Via an API, people have used it to automatically write emails and articles, summarize text, compose poetry and recipes, create website layouts, and generate code for deep learning in Python. But an AI lab based in Tel Aviv, Israel -- AI21 Labs -- says it's planning to release a larger model and make it available via a service, with the idea being to challenge OpenAI's dominance in the "natural language processing-as-a-service" field. The startup says that the largest version of its model -- called Jurassic-1 Jumbo -- contains 178 billion parameters, or 3 billion more than GPT-3 (but not more than PanGu-Alpha, HyperCLOVA, or Wu Dao 2.0).
